Rental Program Frequently Asked Questions

Who can rent?

Both new and existing residential customers can choose to rent natural gas equipment.

  • I have a business, can I rent? Yes, you can rent your equipment if the application calls for the specific type of residential equipment available through the Rental Program.
  • I’m a landlord and my tenants pay the heat. Who pays the rental charges? The rental charges can be paid by either the tenant or landlord; however, the contract must be signed by the landlord. We cannot enter into a rental contract directly with tenants.

Will the rental rates change over time?

The market rental rates will change on an annual basis for both water heaters and furnaces/boilers. For existing customers who are renting a furnace or boiler, their rates upon signing will be frozen for five years, and then will be subject to change on an annual basis. For existing customers who are renting a water heater, their rates will be frozen for a minimum of 12 months, at which time their rate will also be subject to change on an annual basis.

Why is a natural gas water heater more expensive to rent than an electric water heater?

Since a natural gas water heating appliance is more expensive to buy than an electric water heater, the cost to rent a natural gas water heater is correspondingly higher. That being said, a natural gas water heater provides the renter with the added benefits of faster recovery, more stable/consistent hot water delivery and virtually never running out of hot water.

Who will install my equipment?

Enbridge Gas New Brunswick and its partners will ensure timely and efficient installation and provide free maintenance and 24 hour service for all natural gas rental equipment.

Am I covered if my equipment needs to be serviced or replaced?

Rental equipment will be serviced and maintained at no charge. When the appliance needs to be replaced, the customer can enter into a new rental agreement for replacement equipment.

What if I do not want to continue renting?

You must commit to rent your equipment for a mandatory buyout period, 12 months for water heaters and five years for space heating equipment. During this period, your rent is guaranteed not to increase. If you decide to discontinue renting during the mandatory buyout period, you will be required to buyout the remaining value of your rental contract. If you no longer want to rent your equipment after the buyout period and you do not want to purchase the equipment, call us and we will remove your equipment and cancel your rental charges. You can purchase your equipment at its depreciated value at any point during your rental contract.

What if I move?

The equipment covered by your rental agreement is transferable to the next homeowner should you decide to sell your home. It is important to note that when a house is sold with a natural gas rental appliance, it is the seller’s obligation to advise the homebuyer that the appliance is rented.
