A Journey to Remember

What started out as an over 200 kilometer intimidating bike adventure, turned into an amazing and exhilarating journey to conquer cancer.

Five Enbridge Gas New Brunswick employees, Dave Charleson, Elaine Buck, Sara Beyea, Scott Murray and Dawn Allaby, recently participated in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, an epic two day cycling event where more than 4,800 of people gathered together to ride 212 kilometers from Toronto to Niagara to raise money to benefit The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret Hospital, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.

Elaine Buck, attachment coordinator at Enbridge Gas New Brunswick, is a cancer survivor and explains that to take part in an event like this was something that she will never forget.

“To cross the finish line and know that there were thousands of riders, cheering people and volunteers all coming together to fight for people’s lives, gave me such a euphoric feeling,” said Buck.  “It was absolutely exhilarating to be a part of such an event.”

Similarly, Dave Charleson, general manager of Enbridge Gas New Brunswick, realizes the importance of many people coming together to conquer cancer.

“As thousands of people, one by one, crossed the finish line each day, I felt an amazing sense of accomplishment knowing that we challenged ourselves and came together as everyday men and women determined to play a part in making a contribution to the fight against cancer,” he said.

“I couldn’t help but think of our team mate Elaine and her successful fight against cancer and a former colleague who recently passed away far too young, as well as the many other people who I have known that have been affected by this terrible disease.”

All of the riders agree that while it was a physically demanding journey, it was also a very emotional experience, putting life a little more into perspective.

All say that this would be an adventure that they would do again in a heartbeat.

In the end these five riders, supported by family, friends and fellow Enbridge Gas New Brunswick colleagues, raised over $20,000 which contributed to the grand total of $18.1M raised by all 4,800 riders.
