If you find suddenly that your natural gas furnace, boiler, water heater, fireplace or air conditioner are not working, you may be able to solve the problem yourself and avoid a possible service charge by taking the following steps before calling.
If you are unable to correct the problem, please call us at 1-800-994-2762 and select the “Service” prompt to have one of our qualified natural gas technicians respond to your request.
- Ensure your outside appliance vents and meter are clear of snow, ice or other obstructions.
- Ensure your thermostat is set to the "on" position or the “heating” position – not “cooling” or “off”.
- If your thermostat is battery powered and the display is blank or showing low battery, try replacing the batteries.
- Make sure the temperature setting on the thermostat is set above the indoor temperature (indicated on your thermostat) by a couple of degrees.
- Check the electrical panel to ensure the breaker for the unit is in the “on” position or that the fuse is not blown.
- Ensure that your heating systems power switch (similar to a light switch and located near your heating equipment) is in the “on” position.
- Check the filters.
o 1” filters should be replaced monthly or as needed.
o High capacity pleated filters should be changed every 3 months or as needed.
o Do not wait until the furnace stops prior to changing the filter as this is hard on the unit and unnecessarily increases your natural gas bill due to lower operating efficiency.
- Check all supply air registers to make sure they are open and blowing air.
- Ensure your outside appliance vents and meter are clear of snow, ice or other obstructions.

- Ensure your outside appliance vents and meter are clear of snow, ice or other obstructions.
- Reset your water heater by unplugging the power cord and waiting 5 seconds before plugging it back into the electrical outlet. If you are doing this routinely, schedule a service call (1-800-994-2762) for further investigation of the issue by a natural gas technician.
- Ensure the outside appliance vents and meter are clear of snow, ice or other obstructions.
- If your fireplace has a remote control, change the batteries in the remote and in the signal receiver unit (typically found behind the service panel at the bottom of the unit).
- Check the electrical panel to ensure the breaker for the unit is in the “on” position or that the fuse is not blown.
- Ensure that your heating systems power switch (similar to a light switch and located near your heating equipment) is in the “on” position.
- Ensure your thermostat is set to the "on" or “cooling” position – not “heating” or “off”.
- Make sure the temperature setting on the thermostat is set below the indoor temperature (indicated on your thermostat) by a couple of degrees.
- Ensure that your outdoor air conditioning (condensing) unit is running. If it is not running:
o Check the electrical panel to ensure the breaker for the unit is in the “on” position or that the fuse is not blown.
o Check the outdoor disconnect switch to make sure it is in the “on” position (the disconnect switch is located near the unit and is typically contained in a grey box mounted on the wall).
- Ensure that the blower motor on your furnace is running. If the thermostat is in the “cool” position the furnace blower should be running. If it is not running:
o Check to make sure the power switch located near the furnace is in the “on” position.
- Be sure that you have changed the filter in your furnace recently. A blocked filter can cause your outdoor air conditioning unit to shut down due to lack of proper air flow. Your filter should be changed or cleaned regularly.
- Check to ensure that the flow of water in the condensate tubing from the top of your furnace to the drain or pump is not restricted. To clean, disconnect and run water through the tubing.
- Check all supply air registers to make sure that they are open and blowing air.
